It took me a really long time after arriving to get used to the staircases in The Netherlands. The houses here are taller than they are wider, and, as a result, the staircases are often in spirals with very narrow steps. I remember showing my mom via Skype and she wondered how people moved furniture in and out of these houses. I finally got my answer in Amsterdam when our tour guides (both on the walking tour and the canal tour) pointed out the hooks at the top of each building: people use the top floor windows and rope to get everything in and out! Well, at least they used to… looks like nowadays, there are slightly more technologically-advanced methods of moving. Picture above taken outside a home a couple streets down from my place.
